Levando a cabeça do general à cidade, provoca o desânimo e a fuga do exército invasor, garantindo a libertação de Israel.

The first chapter of Judith introduces the background of the story. King Nebuchadnezzar defeats Arphaxad, king of the Medes, in a great battle and strengthens his kingdom. He then summons the surrounding nations to join his military campaign, but many refuse. Enraged by their disobedience, he vows to punish every nation that rejected his authority.

In the second chapter, Nebuchadnezzar begins to carry out his plan of revenge against the nations that refused to obey him. He summons Holofernes, his chief military commander, and orders him to march against all the rebellious peoples. Holofernes sets out with a huge army, destroying cities and devastating the lands he passes through. Terrified, the nations submit to his power. The chapter prepares the way for the great threat that will soon reach Israel.

Holofernes continues his campaign. Frightened nations surrender, give him their wealth, and recognize Nebuchadnezzar’s authority. His goal is to spread the king’s power and glory throughout the lands.

The leaders of the peoples tell Holofernes about the Israelites, explaining that they are different from other nations because they worship one God and follow His laws. Achior, leader of the Ammonites, advises Holofernes not to attack Israel before finding out whether the people have sinned against their God. He says that as long as Israel remains faithful, God will protect it; but if it abandons its covenant, it may be defeated. However, Holofernes rejects this advice and becomes filled with pride.

Holofernes becomes furious with Achior for defending the Israelites and saying that their God could protect them. He orders Achior to be taken to Bethulia and handed over to the Israelites. Achior is left near the city and tells the inhabitants everything Holofernes had planned. The Israelites welcome him, and Achior begins to recognize the power of the God of Israel.
